Cold ridge formation mechanisms on the Agulhas Bank (South Africa) as revealed by satellite-tracked drifters

چکیده

The formation of the cold ridge, a seasonal mid-shelf upwelling feature on Agulhas Bank, is investigated from combination satellite-tracked surface drifters, in situ current and temperature data, as well satellite sea (SST) chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). observational data showed coastal along Tsitsikamma coast to be induced by easterly wind austral summer, with coexistent westward flowing current. Under this regime, drifters moved west onto water, thereafter following southward-curved 100 m isobath. Satellite observations March–April 2008 increased south-westward advection wind-driven upwelled water during an Current intrusion that resulted classically shaped ridge. Also interest was passing Natal Pulse south-eastern shelf edge Bank July 2007. This generated large cyclonic eddy Bight attendant warm plume swept over adjacent shelf. Two idle positioned at time, immediately Pulse, were rapidly advected offshore curved isobath, confirming long-thought association ridge cyclone. A moored meter (1.5 km offshore) effect nearshore. Drifter trajectories show accelerated flow side recirculation towards east its shoreward side. These findings strongly support Westward Transport Hypothesis where squid paralarvae are inshore breeding grounds, food maxima interior central improve their chances survival can therefore have important implications for management South African chokka fishery.

Evaluation of an Oil Spill Trajectory Model Using Satellite-tracked, Oil-spill-simulating Drifters

We deployed ninety-seven oil-spillsimulating drifters over the continental shelf of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico during five hydrographic surveys conducted from 1997 through 1999. Earlier, sideby-side comparisons with spilled crude petroleum on the ocean surface had demonstrated that these drifters moved on the ocean surface like consolidated oil slicks under light to moderate winds. (Under ...

Prevalence of Vibrio cholerae in rivers of Mpumalanga province, South Africa as revealed by polyphasic characterization

Cholera is a life-threatening diarrhoeal disease, which mainly affects inhabitants of developing countries due to poor socio-economic conditions and lack of access to potable water and sanitation. Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae are the aetiological agents of cholera. These bacteria are autochthonous to aquatic environments, hence water plays a central role both in the epidemiology and transmission o...

Ridge-like lower mantle structure beneath South Africa

[1] Recent (ScS-S) results from probing the deep structure beneath southern Africa display strong delays of up to 10 s at distances beyond 90 . Such delays could be explained by long-period tomographic models containing smooth (weak) features with the addition of rough (strong) D00 structure (3–9% drops in shear velocities). However, these structures cannot explain the (SKS-S) differentials sam...

Mechanisms of amyloid formation revealed by solution NMR

Amyloid fibrils are proteinaceous elongated aggregates involved in more than fifty human diseases. Recent advances in electron microscopy and solid state NMR have allowed the characterization of fibril structures to different extents of refinement. However, structural details about the mechanism of fibril formation remain relatively poorly defined. This is mainly due to the complex, heterogeneo...
